As Autumn officially begins the new round of pests start making their way into our homes and property. A few of the most common pests for Fall/Autumn months, as we talked about in the previous blog post, are stink bugs, ants, and cockroaches. This post we are going to chat about STINK BUGS.

What are stink bugs? Officially named Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). They are considered an invasive species which means they are not native to the area and were brought to the area. It is believed that stink bugs made their way from Eastern Asia to Pennsylvania by cargo in the early 1990’s according to PESTWORLD.org.

Why do we have problems in North Carolina? They are attracted to the plethora of farms and vegetation many families live near in North Carolina. In Autumn, stink bugs like to become active especially around areas with gardens and farms. The good thing is that they are not the type of pest who are on the constant search for food and water. They tend to just be wanderers inside your home popping up in what seems like random places, like in your kitchen or the curtains in your living room. You’ll sometimes find them on your walls “sun-bathing” during the cold, winter months.

These pesky insects are rightly named because of their distinctive odor they give off when they feel threatened. Once you smell this foul odor, you’ll never forget it. These “stinky” pests can damage clothing, furniture and other fabrics with their droppings and tend to hide in personal belongings to make their way into your home. Their biggest threat, however, is their foul-smelling odor.
